Thank you Coach Sarabjit for the party!

The Rock Boys would like to take the time to say thank you to Coach Sarabjit and his family for making us feel so welcome at his home for the 5th consecutive year to celebrate our end of season party. It has to go down as the coldest summer party so far.

We'd also like to thank all the parents for all the food & drink provided at the event as well as the great company and conversations. Hopefully this will be one of the moments in the future we look back on fondly together.

Javier Hernandez’s Face Scores Important Goal Against Chelsea

Hi Team! Manchester United beat Chelsea 3-1  in the Community Shield on Sunday. It also marked Javier Hernandez's first competative game for the club.

On your first day at work, it's all about keeping your head down, not attracting too much attention to yourself, and definitely not doing anything clumsy/humiliating.

Fair to say, Hernandez's first day at the office was slightly mixed.

BC Provincial players are back in the squad.

The Canadian Rocks are very excited to welcome back a couple of key players in Matteo Bordignon and Eric de Graaf who were chosen to represent the BC Provincial team in Winnipeg. Eric,Jeevin, and Matteo representing BC Provincial.
We would also like to welcome Riley Gallant who has played with many of the boys for a number of years now.

Topsy turvy Canadian Rocks tournament ends in disappointment.

This weekend the boys were playing in there own Canadian Rocks Tournament, at U-13 Gold level.

Vs West Coast Panthers
Captains =
Won 6-3.

Vs BC Tigers
Captains =
Lost 1-0.

Unfortunately the boys did not do enough to play in the final due to the 1-0 loss to BC Tigers, as this enabled them to tie with the CRS boys on 9 points and in so doing, they were through due to section 4, rule 7a which is that when a team is tied, they will judge on the outcome of a head to head match.

This is why we always remind you to play at 110% and never leave decisions to a referee or tournament rules. Enjoy your Sunday.

England's poor performance poll results!

Hi Team! We asked "Why did England lose against Germany and ruin Coach Stevens Sunday?", and you all voted poor refereeing was to blame for England's loss :(

Coach Steven has had some time to think and believes England just did not deserve to go through. At the end of the day we didn't really see any of the England players shine and they all seemed to be playing at 75%, and as I always say, if you play at 75% you win nothing. Everyone needs to be playing at 100% or above to be successful.

Happy Belated Birthday Austin Purewall!!!

We wish you a Happy Birthday and a wonderful day,

From all the CRS Boy's!

*Sorry for the late post's however Coach Steven's PC is fried like a bucket of KFC!

Midseason team BBQ

The CRS Family decided to have a team midseason team BBQ, and with the World Cup taking place this year we decided to have our own CRS World Cup on the FIFA10.
CRS World Cup Tournament begins!
First all the players had to get together to discuss the rules of this knockout tournament played on the PlayStation 3:
CRS Boys waiting to get the Tournament started.
Then the Dad’s shouted the team to get some BBQ:
CRS Boys taking a break from the tournament to eat some BBQ.
The boys then continued with the tournament until it came down to the final between Austin (Brazil) Vs Gavin (France). It was a fantastic tournament where Gavin Won the final against Austin 1-0.
Austin Vs Gavin in the Final!
Best game of the tournament had to go to Harman Sull Vs Arjun Girn where Harman was winning 2-1 and Arjun came back to win 3-2 scoring in the 90th minute to make it to the semi final.

It was a great BBQ and an awesome time. Thank you all!

Although the training session didn't help them win the World Cup, they were lucky to survive I think!

Nutrition article to read and share with your parents.

Hi Team! I was looking over the BC Soccer website the other day and found some great tips on Nutrition by Rick Celebrini. Before you read the article, you must remember this is only a guidline for all soccer players young and old and nothing is ever perfect. Its always best to have a check up with your doctor and take their advice.

Rick Celebrini writes,

1) A well-balanced daily diet is the key to maintaining the energy for intense training. This means 2/3 carbohydrates (starch, milk, fresh fruits and vegetables), 1/3 protein (meat, fish and poultry) and a minimal amount of added fat. Supplements, for the most part, have not been proven to work and are often expensive, unnecessary, and in some cases potentially dangerous.

2) A pre-game meal is not meant to supply the energy for a game – the energy will not reach the muscles in time. However, a high carbohydrate meal is easy and quick to digest and should be consumed 3 –4 hours before game time.

3) A small snack can be eaten 1 –2 hours prior to game time but avoid sweets – they will not give you instant energy.

4) Hydration is one of the most important components of an athletes’ preparation, and often one of the most neglected. It is crucial in regulating body temperature and avoiding early fatigue. Drink plenty of water before and during a game.

Keep a water bottle by the goal posts – this may even encourage those forwards to get back and defend! Replace 1 litre of water for every kg of weight loss after a game (i.e. fluid loss from sweat).

Your play on the field is driven by the amount and quality of the fuel in your tank. To ensure optimum performance follow the above guidelines and keep the fried schnitzel (CRS Boys probably do not eat schnitzel, so think more friend chicken and burgers I guess) to a minimum.

So that is the artical by Rick Celebrini which I thought would be helpful to those who have asked about food habits. I would also suggest drinking chocolate milk after each practice and game to replace carbs and proteins you lose. I will have more information on the benefits of chocolate milk up on the blog soon.

Stuttering 10th Annual Akal FC Soccer Tournament

This weekend the boys were invited to participate in the 10th Annual Akal FC Soccer Tournament, at U-13 Gold level. A well organized tournament held in Surrey, BC.

Vs BC Tigers
Captains = Gavin Pannu & Harman Sull.
The previous meeting between the two teams was a torrid affair where the CRS players saw some atrocious challenges against them go uncalled by the referee. The CRS Boys started the first half with some good possession however they did not trouble the Tigers goalkeeper and never shifted out of 2nd gear. A penalty decision went unseen by the referee, but you can never rely on the referee to win you a game, but yourself.

In the second half the boys were warned a game played in 2nd gear never turns into a winner and with the warning from the coaches going unheard, the team’s overconfidence was punished. A cross from the far right from 35-40 yards had everyone fooled, except coach Avtar on the sidelines who said it was going in, and it did. As the boys resumed the game from the center circle they were more positive in their play and saw some clear chances go begging as well as a shot from a central defender skimming the top of the cross bar even though they only shifted into 3rd gear.

It was a well deserved victory by the BC Tigers who played less of the rough stuff and more of the good stuff. A game in which the CRS Boys know they let themselves down once again by underestimating the opposition.
Lost 1-0.

Vs Akal FC
Captains = Gavin Pannu & Manjit Bassi.
Coming into the game the boys said they had something to prove after the morning games disappointment. The game got off to a bright start for CRS, showing some great pass and move football and really applying the screws to the opposition.

However a miss kick opened a gap and the opposition took the lead. The boys then changed gears back in to 2nd and of course, a second goal was conceded in the first half while a CRS player was on the ground injured. Half time could not come soon enough.

At half time, the Boys were reminded of the good periods of football they had enjoyed and where they had been effective. But also how disappointing this tournament had become. With questions being asked of them, they took to the field as if playing in 2nd gear was cool. But as soon as the whistle blew, a whole new animal was unleashed on Akal FC.

Passing, movement, aggression, attacking, defending, vocals, and all the positives were on display by the CRS team as they pushed the Akal players who were finding it hard to coupe. All of these characteristics combined together to produce the breakthrough goal after a CRS player was felled in the penalty box, and the ensuing shot was scored.

Time became a factor, and as it was running out the boys had to press, knowing they would leave gaps but without risk there is no victory. They showed tremendous heart, and as tired faces were seen across the field they kept finding that extra burst of energy to keep pushing. Akal scored their third in the final minute on the counter attack, but it did not matter, the CRS Boys finally woke up in the second half of their second game and hopefully I never have to write about playing in 2nd gear and being asleep ever again.
Lost 3-1.

Congratulations to both teams and best of luck in the final.

Coca-Cola "Longest Celebration" World Cup ad, extended version.

Hi Team! The first World Cup I remember watching from the begining to end and knowing the players, teams, moves, etc, etc, etc, was the 1990 World Cup in Italy, also known as Italia '90.

Besides watching England get knocked out in the Semi Finals, seeing Gazza cry, and West Germany lifting the World Cup, I will remember it for celebrations. An unknown Cameroonian called Roger Milla, scored for his country and showed his passion for his country by dancing at the corner flag and I think for the next 6 months after Italia '90 all you would see is kids running to the corner flag to dance in celebration each time they scored.

Disappointing Harjit Brar Memorial Tournament.

This past weekend, the CRS Boys entered the Harjit Brar Tournament played in both Delta and Surrey. Last year, the boys took silver and were looking to take gold to make it three in a row.

Vs Abbotsford United
Captains =
Update to come.
Won 6-1.

Vs Akal FC
Captains =
Update to come.
Lost 2-0.

Vs BC Tigers (formerly known as Punjab Tigers)
Captains = Austin Purewal, Harman Ghatora, & Joban Rai.
The boys felt the game was in the bag before the whistle had blown as the BC Tigers had never beaten them over the past few years.

As the boys got the game going they were not allowed to get into any type of rhythm as the Tigers changed there game plan and started the game aggressively. The referee let the first few challenges go which is to be expected, however as the first half continued, they became more reckless and the CRS boys were unable to get there pass and move football going.

In the second half a clumsy free kick was given away and the BC Tigers were able to score off a long ball into the box which was met by an awkward header by a crs player for an own gaol. With the Tigers going a goal up, they decided to put up a wall in front of the net. Although the boys weren’t able to get in rhythm they were obviously winning free kicks, however none of them were able to trouble the Tigers goalkeeper and the referee did not brandish a card. Congratulations to the BC Tigers on there victory and winning there first ever tournament.
Lost 1-0.

I am very confident in all your abilities and would not have missed these games if I didn't feel you guys were up to the challenge. Remember to stick to coach Avtars game plan, be vocal, pass the ball around, and don't get sucked into the other teams "kick and run" style of play.

All the very best, Steven.

Hi Team! So as you know I love soccer, and it's one of the biggest things I miss about England besides family, and fish & chips. The adverts for soccer in England and across Europe are amazing and this Nike advert for this years World Cup is probably the best one I have ever seen. KDS U-13 Gold Tournament Champions!

This long weekend the team played in the KDS Vancouver Tournament. We had won the competition last year and came back to defend our title.

Vs Eagles 1
Captains = Arjun Girn & Karn Singh.
We had played the Eagles in the MSA Tournament and the players felt they should never have given away a goal in the 3-1 win. With a point to prove in keeping a clean sheet, the team went to business from the get go. A quick one-two punch in the opening 10 minutes saw the Rocks take a 2-0 lead into the break. In the second half the Rocks imposed themselves further with the passing game and rounded off the match with a wonderful strike from the central defender, he read the oppositions pass to intercept the play, looked up to notice the keeper of his line and then produced a mouth watering shot to lob the keeper from 35-40 yards.
Won 4-0.

Vs Dasmesh Utd
Captains = Harman Gatora & Harman Sull.
Playing Dasmesh Utd in the semi finals became a family affair as one of the team’s nephew/cousin was playing on the opposing team. They had previously beaten Abbotsford United 5-0 the day before and were coming into the game on a high as a newly formed team. With the Rocks confidence being high from there previous victory, they continued where they left off the previous day with pass & move football and ended the half 3-0 up.

In the second half, the team felt they could finish the game early and struck two goals in quick succession. A third was then quickly added to this performance of discipline and communication. As mentioned before, this Dasmesh Utd team was newly formed and we expect them to be much stronger next time around as they have very good players who just need a little time to gel.
Won 6-0.

Vs Akal FC (formarly know as Sikh Temple FC)
Captains = Gurtej Hehar & Joban Rai
Playing Akal FC is always a special occasion as both teams enjoy a healthy competition with each other. They have a very talented squad of Metro players so it’s always a great measuring stick to play against them. Akal took the lead in the first 15 minutes, however the CRS Boys did not drop there heads, they persevered with the game plan to level the score 1-1. But before the first half came to a close, Akal took a 2-1 lead with a great show of speed.

In the second half CRS knew they had the ability to win, they just needed to pull one goal back. As the game became more physical and time was running out a CRS player made a foul and an Akal player lashed out, and a red card was produced by the referee. With CRS having the man advantage, they applied the screws until they levelled the game 2-2 in the last 30 seconds with some extraordinary passing which pushed the defence into there own 6 yard box.

As the final whistle blew, the game tied, fate rested with a penalty shootout. With both teams missing one a piece, the CRS keeper made a fantastic save to take home the gold. Well done to both teams for playing some great soccer!
Won 2-2 (6-5 on penalties).

Friendly against the Whitecaps FC U-12 team

Captains = Gavin Pannu & Harman Sull.
Today was a proud moment for the Canadian Rocks organization, as this was the first time a team from the club had been invited to play against the Whitecaps. The game started in a lethargic mood much like the warm weather, with a lot of respect shown by the CRS players towards their smaller counterparts, so much so that the Whitecaps started to impose themselves on the game. Gradually the Whitecaps took the lead and it was up to the CRS Boys to show there nerve. Before the first half came to a close, a wonderful display of pass and move football was shown by the CRS team before a venomous left footed strike was dispatched into the top right corner which forced a fantastic save from the keeper.

At half time the boys felt they had more to offer and went about there business where they had left off in the first half. Within 5 minutes CRS had levelled the game from a corner kick. With the momentum firmly with CRS they then took the lead in open play. The younger Whitecaps then struck back to tie the game and then with 10 minutes to go they took the lead. There were wasted opportunities for both sides; nevertheless a fantastic game of soccer was on display. So fantastic that only 3 fouls were called throughout the whole game, as mentioned before, a little too much respect was shown by the older CRS players.
Lost 3-2.

BC Provincial Vs Surrey Revolution

Last Friday, a few of the team went to support Matteo and Eric as they played for the BC Provincial team against a few friends who also play for the Surrey Revolution. It was an exciting game where the Surrey Revolution had surprised a few spectators with an excellent first half performance and a 2-0 lead. They showed a great desire to take the game to the Provincial team.

In the second half it was much of the same with both teams battling for possession in the center of the park, however the BC team started to turn the screws and with each period of controlled possession, they started to dictate the game a little more then the Revolution. The Revolution represented the city of Surrey very well and showed there is a wealth of talent in the region! Both Eric and Matteo played fantastically well and we wish Matteo a speedy recovery from the injury he sustained towards the end of the match.
BC Provincial Won 4-2.

MSA Abbotsford U-14 Silver Tournament Champions!

This past weekend we were invited to compete at the MSA Tournament in Abbotsford, as they did not have a U-13 category they asked if we would like to move up into U-14 Silver. Not wanting to turn down a challenge, we decided to give it a go and treat it as a friendly, as the team has not played together in some time and we added a few new faces to the squad.

Vs Abbotsford United.
Captains = Joban Rai & Rajan Sangha.
The Tournament started off well against Abbotsford United, with the boys putting the peddle to the metal from the moment the Ref blew his whistle. With the Abbotsford defence struggling to get the ball outside there own half and the CRS boys playing their pass and move style, it was only a matter of time for the goal to come. A scramble in the penalty box caused an Abbotsford player to panic and foul the striker inside the box. Once the Ref had called the penalty, the CRS defender stepped up to tuck it away in the bottom corner and the momentum stayed with the CRS team. A well polished performance was put on show, with a disciplined defence pushing forward to support the attack.
Won 6-0.

Vs. Pacific Eagles.
Captains = Gurtej Hehar & Rajan Sangha.
After the controlled performance against Abbotsford United, the CRS boys were already being touted as Champions before kick-off; however the Pacific Eagles were not going to let CRS have it there own way. They had already watched CRS play against Abbotsford and came at us from the first whistle. The CRS boys knew they had to take control and that’s just what they did. The Eagles had decided to go with a Kick & Run style of play, however what they did not know was that the CRS boys were prepared. Every time the ball went up in the air, a CRS player was on hand to bring the ball back down to the ground and the pass and move style was just too much for the Eagles to handle, however the ball just wouldn't go into the back of the net. However a panicked Eagles defender miss judged a wonderful cross to put the ball past his own keeper.

At half time with a goal to the good, the boys felt they could really take the game to the eagles and from the get go they went at them. However the Eagles had come up with a new game plan, instead of playing soccer, they decided to try and intimidate the CRS boys with lunging challenges and flying elbows. The Ref seemed to miss most of the calls; however he came good when the CRS attacking midfielder burst through the left channel and into the box only to be man handled by something seen in the WWE. With the Penalty awarded, there was no fear this ball was going into the back of the net. A fantastic calm finish was provided by the young man who had not missed a penalty in 3 years. As the Eagles continued to play dirty, CRS continued to show them how the beautiful game is played and it showed when the 3rd was scored. A wonderful cross played in from the left was hit fantastically by a left footed player with his right foot into the back of the net. The Eagles knew the game was over and a lucky bouncing ball helped them pull a goal back. Hopefully they learnt it is always better to play the beautiful game then try wrestling with players when losing.
Won 3-1.

Vs Canadian Rocks Team #1
Captains = Harman Ghatora & Manjit Bassi.
The Final was a special occasion for the Canadian Rocks organization. To see two teams meet in the final from the same club was very special. Our boys knew they had a trophy in the bag, but it was up to them which color it would be. The game began as a tight affair, with either team giving away nothing. As the game progressed our boys started to apply the pressure and as the screws turned the goals came. At half time the boys were up by 2 goals and in the second half they did not let up and continued to press by adding another two to round off the half.
Won 4-0.
